With the change in the weather over the last couple of weeks I finally got round to putting on my Schwalbe Marathon Winter tyres. I got these a few winters ago, the day after falling off on some ice and deciding that I quite liked having a bit of grip. I did a fair bit of research before going with the Marathon Winter. They aren’t cheap, but then none of the studded tyres are.
These tyres have small metal studs that give you some grip on the ice and snow. They are not a guarantee that your bike wont slide away from under you, but if you take it easy you can carry on cycling on icy days.
The only downside I have found is that when there’s no ice or snow you sound like you are cycling over rice crispies. It’s a sound that does get peoples head turning, wondering what on earth is making that noise, but that’s a small price to pay.
I also have managed to get these on and off my rims several times. I know that Schwalbe Marathon’s have a reputation for being difficult to change, but I think that’s not the case. Have a look at the excellent clip below from those good people at Spa Cycles.
